Welcome to positive dv8r!

Just a short post to kick us off…

I have been attending the uLearn conference in Christchurch this week and was introduced to the concept of positive deviance by Steve Wheeler in his keynote presentation on Wednesday afternoon. What a great concept!

As I’m sure you realise, teaching can be a pretty frustrating profession, especially during those times when those around you choose to resist change rather than embrace it. In this vein, I thought I’d share this representation of one of my favourite metaphors about the integration of ICT – Lindy McKeown’s Pencil Metaphor (although, I’m not quite sure who is responsible for this most excellent graphic version).

Where are you?

Where do you want to be?

Where do your students need you to be?

I’m in, I assume there will be Tshirts.

Reckon positive deviance is much bigger than Steve’s representation at Ulearn10 – I preferred Atul Gawande’s take in “Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance”. http://bit.ly/bqWuJ1 Still if ‘T-shirts” are involved I am in.

So I am discovering, but what he said really did strike a chord for me. Thanks for the book recommendation – another to add to the long list I have amassed for myself over the last few days!
